How you can start a career in a different field without experience tips that got me job offers from Google and other tech giants - CareerEnlightenment.com

Preparing For The  MeetingOnce the meeting is set, we want to make a compelling case for why this company needs your services. The best way to do that is using what I like to call The Audit Technique. It’s extremely simple and effective:Carefully review our prospect’s current set up (website, social media, content, copy, health â€" whatever fits your service)Identify as many issues/improvements as we possibly canDetermine the measurable impact of fixing these issuesShare specific strategies for solving 2â€"3 of the issues and then showcase the potential result of fixing all of themTell them that, regardless of whether or not they hire you, they can keep the audit reportBoom! Easy.Closing The  DealIn the beginning, most of your prospects aren’t going to be seeking you out. That means that you have to convince them that your services will be worth their time and money. The best way to do that is via the following framework:1. AddressWe’re going to start off the meeting by addres sing the issues that you found with their site. Don’t be too critical. The goal here is to make them feel good about their business while also letting them know that there is a lot of untapped potential out there.Hand them your Audit Report and walk them through each of the issues. Explain what is happening, why it’s hurting their business, and what the solution is.2. Illustrate PotentialOnce you’ve explained the issues, you want to clarify what the prospect is missing out on. The more quantifiable this is, the better. For example:Your call to action on the site isn’t strong enough. Your conversion rate is probably 5% lower than where it should be. If your site gets 30,000 visitors a month, that’s 1,500 people we’re not capturing!Instagram accounts like yours typically see 100â€"300 followers every day, but you are only netting 20â€"30. If you implement the strategy I laid out here you should see an immediate boost within a few days. That could mean an additional 2,400 f ollowers each month!Show them how this is impacting their bottom line. Walk them through the math:You: What is your typical sales conversion rate from your email list?Prospect: Hmmm, it’s around 3%You: Wow, that’s pretty good! And how much profit do you make from each sale?Prospect: Typically we net around $150 per sale. You: Awesome. Based on my audit, I’m seeing that we’re missing out capturing an additional 3â€"5% of your site’s traffic due to poor copy and CTA placement. I poked around and saw that your site gets ~30,000 visitors per month which means that we could be capturing an additional 1,500 people every month. Based on the numbers you just gave me, that’s $6,750 per month! If you charge $2,000 per month, that’s a no brainer for your prospect. Any business owner would pay $2,000 if they knew it would result in an incremental profit of $4,750 â€" and you just made $24k this year!Ask Them For The  SaleNow that you’ve proven out the value â€" ask them for the sa le:Tell them that the Audit Report is theirs to keep regardlessReiterate the potential opportunity they have to gainOutline what next steps look like for hiring youAsk them if they want to move forwardChances are good that they’ll want some time to think about it. No worries at all â€" drop note on your calendar to follow up with them 72 hours later. You just booked your first client! Now I want you to rinse and repeat this process for everyone on your spreadsheet. If you can get your foot in the door, you can expect about a 5%-10% close rate.Consolation: Offering Your Services For  FreeSince we’re mostly in this for the learning, this is great option to consider if the above process isn’t initially working out.I found that it was much easier to land clients when I had success stories I could speak to. It’s important to figure out a way to get some results before you go all-in on pitching for money. You can reach out to businesses, same as above, and offer your services for fre e. This takes away all of the risk for the company, making them much more likely to agree, while allowing you to get right to the learning and create real-world results.Remember, we’re in this to try and find a job we love that pays us what we deserve. That is worth a LOT more than a few paid freelance contracts. If the freelancing turns into a source of revenue, that is icing on the cake.Leveraging Your Results To Land Your New  JobThere you have it â€" a step-by-step plan to build the experience you need to land a join a different industry. Now it’s time to get out there and get your foot in there door.First up, edit the resume.Add Your Experience To Your  ResumeAs soon as you have some concrete results under your belt, you’re going to want to add them straight at the top of your resume. This will be the first thing that your potential employer will see and it helps remove any doubt about your qualifications.Way back up at the top of the article we took a look at why companie s hire. The qualifications of X years is just an arbitrary number set by the company to make them feel like they are hiring someone who can do the job.Adding in your freelance experience not only shows that you can do the job, but also that you have an understanding of how to run a business. This knowledge is extremely valuable to an employer, especially for a technical hire because technical folks typically get tunnel vision and have trouble seeing how their work relates to the larger picture â€" making money. Here is a screenshot of my consulting experience on my resume:Identify Influencers At Your Target  CompanyNow that you have the relevant experience, you’re going to want to start connecting with influencers who can help refer you into your dream job. I outline that exact process in my article How To Land A 6-Figure Job In Tech With No Connections so be sure to check that out when you’re ready.

What Not to Say When Negotiating Salary

What Not to Say When Negotiating Salary There’s always a right and wrong time to negotiate salary, but there’s also things you should say and shouldn’t say. When you’ve made it through the interview phase and have an offer on the table, your method of negotiating will go a long way in getting the salary you believe you deserve. Saying the wrong things could lead to some tension and possibly having your offer pulled, regardless of how strong your executive profile is. Here are some things you should never say when negotiating salary. “This offer is insulting” The art of negotiation involves keeping a conversation going until you receive the result acceptable to you. If you are very blunt about an offer being insulting, the conversation could end right there. Consider other alternatives instead. If the employer states they can’t pay any more than what they offered, then negotiate for vacation or other benefits to make up for it. The employer may end up budging on the salary, but if they don’t, then you can respectfully decline. “That’s not enough money for me to live my desired lifestyle” You worked hard on writing an effective resume to get the job you want in the salary range you need. However, your potential employer doesn’t necessarily care what your desired lifestyle is. All they care about is what you bring to the table and bringing you on at the lowest cost possible. Make your negotiation about them instead of you, and you’ll likely end up with a better result. “This may not be the right time considering the budget, but I need a raise” Let’s assume you’ve already visited a professional resume writing service, accepted a job and now believe you should be in line for a raise. Instead of just flat out asking for a raise, present different points to your employer to backup your case. Coming in with confidence instead of being hesitant will give you more credibility. Plus, you never want to give your employer an easy opening to say “no,” which you can do if you acknowledge budget constraints upfront. “Thank you. I accept your offer” Negotiations can’t happen if you accept an initial offer. Any professional resume writing service will tell you an employer always leaves wiggle room when offering a salary. They want to bring you on at the lowest price possible, so you’re leaving money on the table if you don’t at least make one counter offer. Just don’t be too outlandish with your offer, and your employer will likely consider it. Professional Resume Services not only will help you with writing an effective resume, but we can also provide tips on the negotiation process for your salary. Getting into an interview is the first step we help executives with, but then the real work begins when you have an offer on the table. Don’t hesitate to contact us for any advice throughout the process of searching for a job, or if you’re in an active negotiation with your current employer.

More Older Executives Becoming Entrepreneurs

More Older Executives Becoming Entrepreneurs Dream of capping off your career with a startup venture? Join the crowd. Last year 5.5% of jobless managers and executives launched a business, up 31% from 2012 and the highest level since 2009, says outplacement firm Challenger Gray Christmas. Confidence in the economy and access to individual health insurance via Obamacare help fuel the trend, says CEO John Challenger. Age has its advantages. People 45 and older started 48% of firms in one Kauffman Foundation study, but ran 64% of firms surviving four years. That’s likely because older entrepreneurs often have more experience, contacts, and financial resources, says Kauffman researcher Dane Stangler. To keep costs low, he suggests taking advantage of the` explosion in freelance help available online; clearinghouses oDesk and eLance, which are merging, list 8 million professionals, up from 900,000 in 2009. You can use crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter, he adds, not just to raise money, but also to gauge demand for your product or service.

Mandatory Greatness Criticism Is A Compliment - Work It Daily

Mandatory Greatness Criticism Is A Compliment - Work It Daily NOTE: This is a book excerpt with minor edits from Mandatory Greatness: The 12 Laws Of Driving Exceptional Performance by J.T. O'Donnell and Dale Dauten. Criticism is a compliment. What is the absolute easiest response to an employee’s work? The one thing that they always agree with and takes the least time to prepare and the least follow-up? It’s ‘Great work.’ You say that to someone and they never disagree, never argue, never say, ‘What do you mean?’ and never make excuses or offer explanations. It’s fast and easy and that’s why it’s overdone. Add in those other things we talked about, like believing in positive reinforcement and being liked, and you have the perfect formula for happy mediocrity. On the other hand, when you take the time to criticize, THAT’S the real compliment. Why? Think of the underlying message you’re sending to the person you’re talking to: I think enough of you that I’m willing to take my time to truly analyze your work and really pay attention. I believe you can get better, that I see you as improving and growing in your work and career. I care about you and your contribution to the team. Those are real compliments and you know they are real because you are going to back them up with genuine thought, attention and effort. The other compliments, the ‘great work’ ones, are easy and you can’t be sure they’re true because they are unbacked, no gold in them, just words. Now, flip it, and let’s consider the underlying message from the boss who always praises everything an employee does. It either means that such a boss… Doesn’t care enough to take the time and attention to help the employee improve, or Is too wimpy or self-centered to offer help, or Doesn’t know how to help the person improve.” Mandatory Greatness is presented as a conversation between a high-powered business coach, Yvonne Wolfe (described as having “skirts of steel”), and a young manager who won a day of her coaching in a charity raffle. She observes him in his work, then offers a stark and startling analysis of him and his approach to his job: By imitating other managers he is making himself “a commodity product” destined for “inadvertent mediocrity.” She then teaches him to remake himself into a highly-valued teammate and a true leader using The 12 Laws of Driving Exceptional Performance. Will We Be Able To Time Travel Before Achieving Gender Equality At Wor

Will We Be Able To Time Travel Before Achieving Gender Equality At Wor When it comes to explaining why women dont get mora promotions, credit or pay, there are a lot of reasons that factor into why. But a newly released study by the Rockefeller Foundation officially adds a new reason to that list male attitudes.Released earlier this week, the Foundations second annual Women in Leadership Tackling Corporate Culture From the Top report shows women are not being given the same opportunities. 65% of respondents believe that male attitudes in the workplace are why women dont receive these opportunities, with 90% of women agreeing with that statement.Laura Gordon, a managing director at the Rockefeller Foundation, runs an initiative that aims to put more women in leadership positions at Fortune 500 companies. She called the survey results sad and told The Huffington Post that its time to provide more opportunities for women at work. Men will have to provide the opportunities for women to r ise up through the pipeline. While American men and women believe that women are just as qualified as men to lead businesses, they also agreed that its easier for men to reach top leadership positions. (44% of women strongly agreed with this statement.) The study found that there were several perceived barriers (in addition to male attitudes) as to why, including company culture, views about traditional gender roles and lack of advocates for women in the workplace. Here are some other important statistics from the Women in Leadership 2017 survey75% of respondents said that the persistent perception that women prioritize family over career advancement holds women back from leadership positions. Women in their mid-careers feel this the most.More than half of Americans (53%) think men and women are treated differently when it comes to salary. 81% say that pay equity is important believe that pay equity has a major role in increasing the number of women in leadership positions. The number of female CEOs at Fortune 500 companies is at an all-time high of 6%.42% of Americans believe that women lack the confidence to pursue leadership. One in four Americans believe its more likely for them to see time travel than half of Fortune 500 companies led by women within their lifetime.Time travel over gender parity? Thats the craziest thing well read all week.Dr. Kira Banks, associate professor at St. Louis University, says that these statistics can be more than just a disheartening reminder. You dont have to be a part of color or a woman or a person from another marginalized identity to be a champion for diversity, Banks said to Fortune. I think the burden is on the predominantly white men in these positions to be intentional in speaking out about the pipeline and mentoring issues. While some companies have already taken steps to sponsor women in the workplace, the Rockefeller Foundations survey found that changes to company culture can make a make a big difference when it comes to gender parityTwo-thirds of respondents say that an investment in company-wide programs that train and prepare women for leadership positions are crucial to increasing the number of women in leadership.Company-sponsored mentorship programs are also a key way to increase the visibility of women in the workplace. The majority of respondents believe that company-wide initiatives to promote a healthy work-life balance can have a great verstndigung im strafverfahren of impact on increasing the number of women leaders.Despite women serving as 47% of the workforce in the United States, gender inequality is present in all ranks of the business world. The Rockefeller Foundations work has been inspiring so far, but its clear that we still have a long way to go.You can read the full survey results here.
