Personal Branding Case Study Thom Singer, A Conference Speaker Thom Singer does a lot of things right. Hes author of a lot of books.  Hes a professional and business speaker who is nichifying (I made that word up its a luxury of being a blogger :p) himself as a CONFERENCE SPEAKER. How brilliant is that.  There are tons of speakers out there and the successful ones can easily identify and differentiate themselves.  Ive never heard of someone who specializes in making sure a conference goes well, and attendees really get a lot out of it. Thom Singer is the guy who you need to speak at your conference thats the brand hes creating. Okay now heres the brilliant part.  Seriously brilliant. Thom can get up on the highest building in Austin and say Im your speaker hire me!  He can do it on social media and other places hed be crazy to do so Why? The message is ALL WRONG. When people hire the speaker they arent just hiring the person who has the loudest voice they need to hire THE EXPERT.  Maybe even the THOUGH LEADER, if the thought leader isnt a nut-job. Heres what Thom is doing that is crazy brilliant hes establishing his subject matter expertise and thought leadership in a series of 10 posts (you can write 10 posts, cant you??) that is and this is key directly communicating to the meeting planner (think: hiring manager).  This is the person who will make the decision on who to bring in. In these ten posts Thom proves that hes the guy. not by saying how great he is, but by sharing his subject matter expertise and thought leadership. After reading through these posts how could a meeting planner not realize that Thom is going to get the job done!  That is, hes going to bring excitement and success and empowerment to each attendee. 7 Jobs In The Beauty Industry That Could Be Your Second Career - Classy Career Girl

7 Jobs In The Beauty Industry That Could Be Your Second Career If you are looking to supplement your income, you should consider a career in beauty. Supplementing your income with a beauty career does not mean going from door to door with cosmetics, but offering your professional skills to your local community or the world! To learn more about a career in the beauty industry, and to find out if it is the right choice for you, be sure to read our overview of possible beauty careers below! 7 Jobs In The Beauty Industry That Could Be Your Second Career 1. Beauty Therapist If you are a sociable person who has no problems making other people feel relaxed, there could be a future for you as a beauty therapist. To become a beauty therapist, you need a friendly and easygoing attitude. If you are a social creature, this could be the career for you. As a beauty therapist, you will be providing your clients with professional face and body treatments; this may include cleansing, massages, makeovers, eyebrow shaping, nail treatments and more. Its an interesting career that enables you to encounter people who are just as passionate about beauty as you are. Thus, it is not impossible to make a career out of your hobby! 2. Modeling If you have the looks and people often say you should model, then why not have a go at it? Even though it is hard to make serious money from the modeling industry, if you are looking to add some income to your household, being a model can bring some extra cash in. Contrary to what many people believe, you do not necessarily have to be a certain height and weight to become a model, because there is a huge difference between high fashion and commercial fashion. While you need the right sizes to work in high fashion, commercial fashion enables people who don’t have the right height or weight to work in the fashion industry. There are numerous plus-sized model agencies, but also agencies for petite models. So, if you have the looks and want to make some money, sign up with an agency that matches your looks. 3. Skincare Specialist Interested in helping people look their best? If so, then there could be a second career waiting for you as a skincare specialist. The job description of a skincare specialist is close to that of a beauty specialist, although a skincare specialist is considered a specialized branch of the esthetician profession. To become a skin care specialist, you also need to be social, because you will encounter many different people. Your day-to-day tasks may include giving cleansing facial treatments to providing advice so your client can look her or his best. Most skincare specialists work in salons and beauty spas, but you could also open your own salon and become self-employed if you have the right business know-how. It is a fulfilling career that could be the right fit for you if you have the skills and kind social nature. [RELATED: 6 Quick Makeup Tips For The Working Woman] 4. Nail Technician Those with patience and a creative nature may find the perfect career in the nail industry. A nail technician is a specialized beauty therapist, only focusing on the maintenance of fingernails and toenails. As a nail technician, you provide manicures, pedicures, nail shaping, cuticle grooming, callus removal, synthetic nails treatments, and much more. If youre bored easily on the job and like to express your creativity, being a nail technician may provide you with the daily excitement you need. 5. Hairdresser If you have good people skills and an interest in fashion and hairstyles, your perfect career may be that of a hairdresser. However, if you consider a career as a hairdresser, you also must be willing to learn new things. Hairstyles are always changing and evolving, so you must be prepared to re-school yourself on new techniques somewhere down the line. There is a huge market available for hairdressers since people will always need a haircut. Unfortunately, there are also many hairdressers around; this means that you must have a true talent and dedication to the profession to make it as a hairdresser. Before you consider opening your own business as a hairdresser, it is best to work at a salon first. By working at a salon, you will gain valuable experiences such as client interaction, appointment scheduling and much more. You will also learn more about the inner workings of a successful salon, an experience that is undoubtedly going to contribute to your own success down the line. 6. Fashion Designer Even though not everyone has the skill and creativity to become an international success, the fashion designer is still one of the most interesting professions in the beauty industry. As a fashion designer, you get to choose and design the clothing. Unfortunately, making your way in the fashion industry is never easy. Much like becoming a hairdresser, you will need loads of experience to make it in the fashion world. If you have the right qualifications, the first place to start is a fashion house where you can learn from fashion designers who have already established themselves in the fashion world. Even though you might like your job and decide to stay permanently, you always have the option to take what you’ve learned and start your own fashion label. Still, it is important never to leave your job too early, because, like hairstyles, fashion is always evolving. So, learn what you can before you decide to go at it on your own. 7. Other Jobs in the Beauty Industry That Could Supply More Income The jobs we described above are just touching the surface of the beauty industry. Other jobs in the beauty industry include shoemakers, dressmakers, tailors, jewelry designers, garment technologists, web merchandisers, and much more. So if you have not found your perfect second beauty career, be sure to consider these as well!

4 Top Tips for Looking After Your Skin This Winter

4 Top Tips for Looking After Your Skin This Winter With the winter season almost here dry skin is an issue that lots of people battle with during the colder weather. As the temperatures drop, this can have an effect on our skin, especially on our sensitive facial skin, which tends to get more exposure to the elements than anywhere else on our body. Even if you’re warmly wrapped up with a hat, scarf and gloves in addition to your winter coat, the cold air is still getting to your face, often causing dryness and irritation. In order to make sure that you remain comfortable and keep your skin in the best condition this winter, we’ve put together some handy tips. Choosing a Good Moisturiser When it comes to looking after your skin during the winter, having a good facial moisturiser is important. Since simply washing your face can dry it out and cause tightness and irritation, combatting this by using a cream that locks moisture into your skin and keeps it hydrated, plump, and smooth is more important in the winter than any other season. When choosing a moisturiser, making sure you opt for one that offers extra hydration, as it is the best choice for the colder weather. This is especially important if you already suffer from dry skin, as the winter weather will only make this worse. Look After Your Lips As one of the most sensitive places on your face, the soft and delicate skin on your lips can be one of the biggest victims of colder weather. Looking after your lips during the winter will help you to avoid issues such as cracked and chapped skin, dry lips, cold sores, and general irritation. Along with choosing a good facial cream or moisturiser such as those from Makari Products to protect your skin from the elements this winter, making sure that you have a good lip balm to apply regularly will also protect your lips and keep them soft and healthy. Use a Humidifier It’s not just the cold air outside that can have an adverse effect on your skin during the winter â€" staying warm at home or work can also contribute to dry and chapped winter skin. Central heating systems and space heaters are often needed to keep us warm and comfortable throughout the day during the winter, but the dry, hot air that they blast throughout your home or office can wreak havoc with your skin. Investing in a humidifier can help you to avoid your skin drying out by helping to disperse the moisture in the air more evenly. Avoid Over Treating If your face is feeling particularly dry and tight this winter, avoid using too many products on it as this will strip it of moisture and leave you feeling even worse. Harsh masks, peels, and facial toners can all strip vital oils out of your skin. Opting for gentle, mild cleansers and soaps is the best way forward when it comes to keeping your skin clean and hydrated during the winter. Winter weather can wreak havoc with your skin, but with the right products and routine, you can avoid common issues. Image credits: Main.   Winter.

How you can start a career in a different field without experience tips that got me job offers from Google and other tech giants - CareerEnlightenment.com

Preparing For The  MeetingOnce the meeting is set, we want to make a compelling case for why this company needs your services. The best way to do that is using what I like to call The Audit Technique. It’s extremely simple and effective:Carefully review our prospect’s current set up (website, social media, content, copy, health â€" whatever fits your service)Identify as many issues/improvements as we possibly canDetermine the measurable impact of fixing these issuesShare specific strategies for solving 2â€"3 of the issues and then showcase the potential result of fixing all of themTell them that, regardless of whether or not they hire you, they can keep the audit reportBoom! Easy.Closing The  DealIn the beginning, most of your prospects aren’t going to be seeking you out. That means that you have to convince them that your services will be worth their time and money. The best way to do that is via the following framework:1. AddressWe’re going to start off the meeting by addres sing the issues that you found with their site. Don’t be too critical. The goal here is to make them feel good about their business while also letting them know that there is a lot of untapped potential out there.Hand them your Audit Report and walk them through each of the issues. Explain what is happening, why it’s hurting their business, and what the solution is.2. Illustrate PotentialOnce you’ve explained the issues, you want to clarify what the prospect is missing out on. The more quantifiable this is, the better. For example:Your call to action on the site isn’t strong enough. Your conversion rate is probably 5% lower than where it should be. If your site gets 30,000 visitors a month, that’s 1,500 people we’re not capturing!Instagram accounts like yours typically see 100â€"300 followers every day, but you are only netting 20â€"30. If you implement the strategy I laid out here you should see an immediate boost within a few days. That could mean an additional 2,400 f ollowers each month!Show them how this is impacting their bottom line. Walk them through the math:You: What is your typical sales conversion rate from your email list?Prospect: Hmmm, it’s around 3%You: Wow, that’s pretty good! And how much profit do you make from each sale?Prospect: Typically we net around $150 per sale. You: Awesome. Based on my audit, I’m seeing that we’re missing out capturing an additional 3â€"5% of your site’s traffic due to poor copy and CTA placement. I poked around and saw that your site gets ~30,000 visitors per month which means that we could be capturing an additional 1,500 people every month. Based on the numbers you just gave me, that’s $6,750 per month! If you charge $2,000 per month, that’s a no brainer for your prospect. Any business owner would pay $2,000 if they knew it would result in an incremental profit of $4,750 â€" and you just made $24k this year!Ask Them For The  SaleNow that you’ve proven out the value â€" ask them for the sa le:Tell them that the Audit Report is theirs to keep regardlessReiterate the potential opportunity they have to gainOutline what next steps look like for hiring youAsk them if they want to move forwardChances are good that they’ll want some time to think about it. No worries at all â€" drop note on your calendar to follow up with them 72 hours later. You just booked your first client! Now I want you to rinse and repeat this process for everyone on your spreadsheet. If you can get your foot in the door, you can expect about a 5%-10% close rate.Consolation: Offering Your Services For  FreeSince we’re mostly in this for the learning, this is great option to consider if the above process isn’t initially working out.I found that it was much easier to land clients when I had success stories I could speak to. It’s important to figure out a way to get some results before you go all-in on pitching for money. You can reach out to businesses, same as above, and offer your services for fre e. This takes away all of the risk for the company, making them much more likely to agree, while allowing you to get right to the learning and create real-world results.Remember, we’re in this to try and find a job we love that pays us what we deserve. That is worth a LOT more than a few paid freelance contracts. If the freelancing turns into a source of revenue, that is icing on the cake.Leveraging Your Results To Land Your New  JobThere you have it â€" a step-by-step plan to build the experience you need to land a join a different industry. Now it’s time to get out there and get your foot in there door.First up, edit the resume.Add Your Experience To Your  ResumeAs soon as you have some concrete results under your belt, you’re going to want to add them straight at the top of your resume. This will be the first thing that your potential employer will see and it helps remove any doubt about your qualifications.Way back up at the top of the article we took a look at why companie s hire. The qualifications of X years is just an arbitrary number set by the company to make them feel like they are hiring someone who can do the job.Adding in your freelance experience not only shows that you can do the job, but also that you have an understanding of how to run a business. This knowledge is extremely valuable to an employer, especially for a technical hire because technical folks typically get tunnel vision and have trouble seeing how their work relates to the larger picture â€" making money. Here is a screenshot of my consulting experience on my resume:Identify Influencers At Your Target  CompanyNow that you have the relevant experience, you’re going to want to start connecting with influencers who can help refer you into your dream job. I outline that exact process in my article How To Land A 6-Figure Job In Tech With No Connections so be sure to check that out when you’re ready.

What Not to Say When Negotiating Salary

What Not to Say When Negotiating Salary There’s always a right and wrong time to negotiate salary, but there’s also things you should say and shouldn’t say. When you’ve made it through the interview phase and have an offer on the table, your method of negotiating will go a long way in getting the salary you believe you deserve. Saying the wrong things could lead to some tension and possibly having your offer pulled, regardless of how strong your executive profile is. Here are some things you should never say when negotiating salary. “This offer is insulting” The art of negotiation involves keeping a conversation going until you receive the result acceptable to you. If you are very blunt about an offer being insulting, the conversation could end right there. Consider other alternatives instead. If the employer states they can’t pay any more than what they offered, then negotiate for vacation or other benefits to make up for it. The employer may end up budging on the salary, but if they don’t, then you can respectfully decline. “That’s not enough money for me to live my desired lifestyle” You worked hard on writing an effective resume to get the job you want in the salary range you need. However, your potential employer doesn’t necessarily care what your desired lifestyle is. All they care about is what you bring to the table and bringing you on at the lowest cost possible. Make your negotiation about them instead of you, and you’ll likely end up with a better result. “This may not be the right time considering the budget, but I need a raise” Let’s assume you’ve already visited a professional resume writing service, accepted a job and now believe you should be in line for a raise. Instead of just flat out asking for a raise, present different points to your employer to backup your case. Coming in with confidence instead of being hesitant will give you more credibility. Plus, you never want to give your employer an easy opening to say “no,” which you can do if you acknowledge budget constraints upfront. “Thank you. I accept your offer” Negotiations can’t happen if you accept an initial offer. Any professional resume writing service will tell you an employer always leaves wiggle room when offering a salary. They want to bring you on at the lowest price possible, so you’re leaving money on the table if you don’t at least make one counter offer. Just don’t be too outlandish with your offer, and your employer will likely consider it.
